In this world, nothing is free, everything has a cost, even if it's not paid in money.
If it's not got a price tag, they are apt to want your time, energy, trust or attention.
It's woven into the fabric of the universe.
Even free sunlight costs entropy.

So many grand illusion songs. What does that tell us?

The key takeaway would seem to be that we're fascinated by the idea that reality isn't what it seems.
And I strongly suspect that's probably not too far off the mark.
Given the grand scale and totality of it all, never mind our very limited perspective.
Back to the songs, perhaps what they are pointing at is not just that reality deceives.
But that our very sense of self is tangled up in those illusions?

But they did get their chicks for free, so that was not an illusion.
If having a million dollars is to be considered being rich - it is just getting by in retirement, well that in today's economic climate is the grand illusion, IMO.
As for free stuff costing something, well free stuff can also be the stepping stones to returns in many different ways. So for some free stuff, the cost justifies the returns.

LoL
For context, £1 million would buy you 3 half-decent houses over here in today's market.
Certainly comfortable.
Not that i would know.
To my mind, "free" implies no direct cost.
So calling it a "stepping stone" doesn't make it truly free.
As to those "chicks" well, those demand time, attention, and effort.

LOL Quickie one night stands excluded from time, attention and effort and how do we know the chicks don't do all the work?
Some of those stepping stones give financial returns back, some say in the order of 5-to-1 up to 10-to-1.

Well, if they are doing it right, i imagine they would be sharing the workload.
Ever notice the way the world tends to give with one hand and take away with the other?
Life has a habit of balancing, or just juggling, gifts and losses.
But in the end, everybody pays the piper, and nothing comes without consequence.
