Quote:Anthropic is standing up to the US Department of War and refusing to remove AI autonomous weapon and mass surveillance safeguards: 'We cannot in good conscience accede to their request'
'We will not knowingly provide a product that puts America’s warfighters and civilians at risk.'
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has released a statement on the company's website regarding its months-long dispute with the US Department of War over the use of its AI technology. In the statement. Amodei outlines his refusal to remove safeguards that prevent its AI products from being used for fully autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance purposes.
"I believe deeply in the existential importance of using AI to defend the United States and other democracies, and to defeat our autocratic adversaries," the statement begins. "Anthropic has therefore worked proactively to deploy our models to the Department of War and the intelligence community.
"However, in a narrow set of cases, we believe AI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values," the statement continues. "Two such use cases have never been included in our contracts with the Department of War, and we believe they should not be included now:

"Mass domestic surveillance.
We support the use of AI for lawful foreign intelligence and counterintelligence missions. But using these systems for mass domestic surveillance is incompatible with democratic values.

"Fully autonomous weapons.
Partially autonomous weapons, like those used today in Ukraine, are vital to the defense of democracy. Even fully autonomous weapons... may prove critical for our national defense. But today, frontier AI systems are simply not reliable enough to power fully autonomous weapons. We will not knowingly provide a product that puts America’s warfighters and civilians at risk."

"They have threatened to remove us from their systems if we maintain these safeguards; they have also threatened to designate us a 'supply chain risk'—a label reserved for US adversaries, never before applied to an American company—and to invoke the Defense Production Act to force the safeguards’ removal."

"Regardless, these threats do not change our position: we cannot in good conscience accede to their request", the statement concludes. "We remain ready to continue our work to support the national security of the United States."

Well it seems as though the Department of War has had it's nose a little disjointed over it plans to use Anthropic's AI systems for things like mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. It's good to see a company put the peoples 'democratic values' ahead of profit.
I imagine if they'd have removed the safe guards for the Department of War, their A.I. would brought in a bigger profit for the company.

Tough call for the CEO. Claude does have the best programming reputation at this time. Stock value will take a hit as the DoD pulls out. Can they survive? Gotta keep working to maintain their lead in the pack.

How will a +$1T/year organization go should Open Claw find a weakness for just a few seconds?  With Tesla getting ready to pump out Optimus, a case or red eye will suck for humanity.

Us in west are becoming outraged about A.I. and surveillance that's already at use and laugh at the Chinese population's mass surveillance and digital score cards. Now it appears that it will soon be used in the west, along with the creation of a Skynet!!

China is ahead in setting up a Moon base. Maybe Elon can catch up if he can make the rockets reusable? AI ain't going to stop at Skynet. Solarnet, Galaticnet and Universalnet is where this thing is going. Space is extremely hostile to a meat sack, as for an autonomous machine, meh. Plenty of them out there already.

Thanks, I do enjoy his tantrums.

It makes me wonder how far he is willing to go to destroy them.

The alarm is not about ideology.

It's ostensibly about compelling the "industrial" "AI" market to produce weapons that are "AI."

The genie is officially out of the bag....

It's "ideologically" repugnant to disallow this "use" for "AI."

Sounds like Sam Altman and OpenAI are “ready to serve” the Pentagon’s whim.

Get that bag, Sam!

Who knew we’d get SkyNet before GTA VI and UBI.

Good Times.

Actually I would bet on Anduril stepping in and making big bucks. The A.I. genie is out of the bag for war fighting, so let us hope group think surveillance is never used on a free country.
Today's fiction tomorrows future ?

"We don't need it. We don't want it."

NEW: US conducted strikes on Iran using Claude AI despite Trump administration banning Anthropic from government usage hours before, per WSJ.
