Turn the light off
#1
My wife and I were talking to some friends last night and something came up that happened years ago.

My wife had a bad habit of leaving lights on in every room of the house. Didn't matter if it was noon on a sunny day, she turned the light on and walked out leaving it on. It wasn't just one room, the whole damn house would be lit up. You could tell which rooms she had been in just by the light being on.

Living room - check
Bathroom - check
Hallway - check.
Kitchen - check
Laundry room - you get the idea.

This was not just a few minutes or even a couple of hours, those lights Would Stay On till I turned them off.

I would walk through the house, grinding my teeth and turning lights off. I would sometimes NOT go around turning them off and showed her the difference in electric bills from month to month. I had tried asking. I had tried bitching. I hatched a plan.
Did the plan involve me being a complete asshole ?

Yes. Yes it did.

I smoke. My wife hates me smoking in the house. I usually just go out on the front porch, sit in the swing and have my cigarette.

Next time I walked through the house and lights were on, did I light a cigarette in the house ? Nope.

I sat down in the living room and Lit A Cigar. I calmly puffed on it  { making sure to create clouds of smoke } while I waited for the smell to waft through the house and get her attention....which did not take long. She came rushing into the room and ask "What are you doing ? You know I hate that"

Me : "Turn the lights off"
Her : "TAKE THAT OUTSIDE ! "
Me : { still calmly puffing }  "Turn the lights off " { This went on for a while }

Now for the Pièce de résistance .....I casually held out the cigar and flicked ashes in the floor. { we have hardwood floors so I didn't burn anything }
You can imagine how that escalated things.

She finally went around the house and turned the lights off and I went outside to finish my cigar. We didn't speak for the rest of the day.

Did I just do this once ? Aw hell no. Every time she left a light on in a room, I sat down in the living room and lit a cigarette.

My electric bills are almost half what they used to be.

I am not above being an asshole to get my point across.

I already know my bad habits.

Cigars. Expensive cigars. Like $300 a box. I use to order them about every other month. Now I get one for my birthday and make them last.

I'm also kinda OCD with vehicle maintenance. I'm ok with 100 miles over on oil changes, but that's my limit. ....and I'm OCD about  my tools. You can use them but put them back EXACTLY where you got them. "Was it on the left side of the bench when you found it ? "Then why is it there now ? "

Don't get me started on putting a socket back in the wrong place. 10 mm goes back in the 10 mm slot, not the 8 mm slot and then put the 8 in the 10. ARRRRGGGGHHHH

- DAVID64- ‘Lights on-.

Wow, does that ring a bell. Our Daughter has perfected the lights on - dad and night - practice. Every single night, prior to hitting the sack, I have also noticed how each household plug socket is used and forever switched on. I suggested, time after time, ‘once used pull plug out’, in fact I do my best to masked sure that only plug left in is the Fridge. T.V. should be pulled out every night. Grrrrr, Cheers friend for you did seem to crack the argument…..
I’m old enough to know it, but too old to ever care.

The half of me that want's to applaud your results...
(especially reducing the bill, I know... 4 kids... three girls...)
But I'm somewhat hesitant...

Yeah, being an asshole works...

But "Asshole" is kind of a spectrum...
And the perspectives of others actually can change your position on the Asshole Rainbow...

One day, you may become subject to the same manner of extortion...
Don't forget who brought those tactics to the battlefield first...
I'm empathic, so I just might apologize preemptively...
because the wheel really does turn...

Then again...
It's hard to argue with success...

A wife's money and bills are equal to a husband's money and bills; they are one in the same.

If the wife put out half the lights and the husband bought and smoked half the cigars, then all would be equal savings on the electrical bill.

Equality and teamwork are the keywords.

One person should not be expected to give up what they want or need while the other does not have to give up any want or need.

You sir are brilliant!

I quit cigarettes, but my stepson gave me a nice cigar for my birthday just passed. Too bad my ole lady likes cigar smoke, in fact she used to smoke them.

I merely go around shutting off or turning things down. Getting upset only seems to give them ammunition in this fight.

Lid on the toilet up, but the seat down? Close that lid or you get to take the toilet apart when something falls in there.

Thermostat? Glue that down with epoxy.

Lights? That is a hard one. Motion sensing lights would be pretty good.

Too bad citations for infractions with penalties to pay would only get laughed at. That would be a total Sheldon Cooper move, and useless without a signed room mate agreement.

Well you can't fight the wind, as they say.

BUT

Have you considered replacing light bulbs with more modern LED ones? When they first came out LED bulbs were terrible, flickering and bad light and such. But now they're much better, I've found! You have to be careful choosing the colour, I found that about 3000K was the right for warm and not too blue. They even work with dimmers now.

I replaced the bulbs at my mom's house, and now not only are they much brighter where needed, but I lowered her electricity usage by an average of 800 watts. Which cut her monthly bill by 1/3. Better than fighting the wind. Although I still do that too, haha.
