I will give some background on what happened according to these is different news agency reporters. Keep in mind, this is in Northridge, California. California law in Northridge says that carrying a loaded rifle in any public place or vehicle is a crime under Penal Code 25850.  Although a federal appeals court recently ruled in January 2026 (Baird v. Bonta) that California's open carry ban is unconstitutional, police officers can continue to enforce prohibition pending appeals.

Keith Porter Jr., who lived in the same apartment complex as the off-duty ice agent, was shooting a loaded AR-15 rifle into the air on new years, when the ice officer felt like it was a threat based on the sound coming closer  and not stationary. The officer confronted Mr. Porter and told him to drop the weapon. When Mr. Porter refused to comply with the order, the officer shot at Mr.Porter to disarm him, to which Mr. Porter pointed the gun at the officer and shot 3 times. The officer ended up killing him. Im still confused at how Mr.Porter shot at the officer and missed.

Here we go: 3 different narratives

1. News outlet 1 reports it as: An off duty Ice agent killed a black man in Los Angeles

https://newsone.com/6755184/off-duty-ice...s-angeles/

2.  News outlet 2 reports it as- Off-duty DHS officer shoots and kills man firing rifle in Northridge

https://www.foxla.com/news/northridge-ne...l-shooting

3.  News outlet 3 reports it as- Los Angeles dad shot by Ice officer

Sorry I cant seem to get the videos embed into this post.  I feel the media is reaching to get as many different outlet groups and narratives as it can. What is your spin on how this went down and the medias involvement?

I think discharging a weapon into to open sky is crime because what comes up must come down and it could come down on someones head.
“The American press is a shame and a reproach to a civilized people. When a man is too lazy to work and too cowardly to steal, he becomes an editor and manufactures public opinion.”

As far as I know, that is the case across the board, not even just in Commifornia.

Wouldn't be surprised if the rifle itself was illegal to own in the state as well.

There's a certain group in this country that cannot think critically for themselves and they allow the media to brainwash them.

I won't name them, they've embarrassed themselves enough lately.

You have to love the “Lebanese unload”!!

Always loved to see them overseas blasting off their guns in the air, without any regard to gravity. Morons.

Everybody spins. And it is easy to see malice and overzealous actions from ICE officers because it confirms my bias.

This could be:

"Drunk idiot on New Years illegally discharges fire arm inside city limits. Is confronted to drop weapon by off-duty cop, responds by pointing his weapon, and gets shot in self-defense."

Or

"Biased off duty cop saw a black guy with an assault rifle, assumed threat, demanded compliance, and then used the most minimal pretext to neutralize suspect."

He could have been defending himself from deadly threat. He could have already disarmed him before he shot him.

Not enough evidence. I dont believe the cop who's claims cant be unverified, but I dont not believe him either. All cops have the capacity to lie in a situation where their actions were oversealous.

But it goes both ways...

You really cant expect justice here, because there would be a miscarriage of it to get the results desired with current evidence. You cant prove malice and unwarranted actions without sufficient evidence or reasonable doubt either.

Bitter pill for the family until some ring footage can be found.

But as far as media narratives go?

Nothing tops Fox News and this administration...

Observe:
Quote:"On December 31st, an off-duty ICE officer bravely responded to an active shooter situation at his apartment complex,” Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. “In order to protect his life and that of others, he was forced to defensively use his weapon and exchange gunfire with the shooter. Fortunately, our brave officer was not injured while protecting his community.”

Who else picks up a Chinese, Russia, or North Korea State Media vibe from these statements?

Why not something like,

"On New Years Eve, An officer with Customs and Immigration Enforcement responded to encroaching gun shots fired near his residence. Upon comforting the suspect the officer was threatened and forced to discharge their service weapon in self-defense "

Do they really need to dress it up in righteous service and glory to the country so freaking much? Do they think they need to say it like that?

So before you talk about MEDIA misleading with obvious spin, please talk about these official statements that sound more and more like North Korean State TV everyday?

My spin:

"Absolute immunity" is not a legal category for law enforcement. There is no "License to Kill" in the sense that some 00x secret Fed can kill at their own discretion with no need to answer for the killing.

The off-duty ICE agent was acting as a civilian at the time of the homicide. Local CSI should have full jurisdiction in investigating the homicide and the scene. Did Porter shoot toward the as yet unidentified killer? CSI could count shell casings and even find where bullets hit walls, doors, or other surrounding objects. They could answer that question.
There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people. - Commander William Adama
