Things that never happened
#1
For general conversation ...
Things that people think happened or said that will happen ...  but proven never really did.
Feel free to add more ...

- Adam and Eve.  At some point hundreds of thousands of  years ago there was a first human, but not Adam and Eve.
- Garden of Eden with talking snakes and God walking and talking with two people.  This is just an allegory.
- Noahs Ark and the world wide flood.  Proven false.   This is just an allegory.
- Exodus as the bible story tells of 2 million Hebrews leaving Egypt and living in the desert for 40 years.
- Tower of Babel story that explains why people speak in so many languages.   Proven false.

- William Tell never shot an apple from his sons head with an arrow.
- Thomas Edison never invented the light bulb.
- Paul Revere never shouted 'the British are coming'.
- Christopher Columbus didn't prove the world was round.
- Betsy Ross didn't create the first American flag.  (well, she could have, but there is no evidence of it)
- No one committed suicide on Wall Street during the crash of 1929.
- War of the Worlds never caused mass panic.
- No witches were burned during the Salem Witch trials.
- Nero never fiddled while Rome burned.
- Marie Antonette never said 'let them eat cake.

It seems that the made up or changed history is more interesting or useful than what actually happened. This just follows the past as to what has happened with oral history. Each retelling was better, more interesting, and more useful if not factual than the last. The tradition continues even after it is all in print.

I am curious as to which version of the War of the Worlds broadcasts you are referring to. All of them did cause local confusion and a few individuals did panic but as you stated, the masses did not panic. The original one was probably was worse but there were many reports to police and some police did respond to the WKBW broadcasts in the 70's.

It seems the shamons of the past are still alive and working on the stories of what is painted on the cave walls. Telling a good story has more traction than telling the truth.
I know too much and question everything.
Does anyone know the minimum safe distance of ignorance?
Did anyone ask the monkeys how much fun the barrel actually was?

I always thought the whole "Christopher Columbus" story was a made up character and fable. The "1492" thing might be all BS as well!  Lol

We've all read Burroughs.

How about "the United States war of independence against the UK was not about taxation, it was about slavery"
I was not here.

While this is a true statement.

It may not come as much comfort to the 20+ people that were hung or that died in prison.

Yes, and all over a landgrab scheme. The 'witches' had inherited some land holdings that some men with power wanted. You could not have single women owning things back then by law and by church.

Apparently the brontosaurus never existed. It was an apatosaurus all along!

Or, it was about commerce management!

Some people say The United States was the best gift The East India Company ever got from The British Crown!

Always thought the war of 1812 was a little sus. What really happened?

Anyway, about "never happened", how about George Washington and his cherry tree? Or wooden teeth?

I am still willing to believe most of the stories about Ben Franklin, however.
