Things Are Looking Up!
#1
Wow.

I went back to ATS to relive some memories and it did not make me feel positive, it was a little desolate.

Then DTOM told me about this place.

Whoever is responsible for this is has done a great job! Well done.

Therefore here is my introduction which I abridged from ATS:

I'm a changed man. Or maybe I have reverted back to how I was when I first joined this place, maybe it was 2008 or 2010 when I joined originally.

I'm back meditating.
I haven't drank alcohol for nearly 600 days.
I am much more chilled out.
I have no inclination to argue, condescend or denigrate others.
I see great benefit in loving my neighbours and forum members no matter how much I disagree with their opinions.

From the bottom of my heart I hope you are all doing well.

Now I explore the forums....

(I do hope this OFCOM legislation in the UK will not threaten this forum, I must get a VPN if it does!).

You have accomplished much and should be very proud of yourself.

A VPN is always a good idea.

Welcome to Deny Ignorance!

It's good you found us!

The community was never vanquished, although sadly, ATS (our traditional home) apparently was. So be it.
But it is not in our community's collective nature to simply acquiesce to someone else's dysfunction.

Enter DI... a shining sanctuary from the nonsense of 'discussion forums as someone's play thing.'

I've wondered about Ofcoms' published "codes of practice and guidance under the UK’s Online Safety Act (OSA)."

Those codes outline the duties that online services providers must comply with to protect users from illegal harms, such as terror, hate, fraud, child sexual abuse, and assisting or encouraging suicide.

Among their regulations are requirements of
  1. Moderation: Tech firms must ensure their moderation teams are appropriately resourced and trained to remove illegal content quickly when discovered.
  2. Reporting and Complaints: Providers must make it easier for users to report harmful content and ensure that complaints are properly handled and addressed.
  3. Algorithmic Testing: Companies must improve the testing of their algorithms to limit the spread of illegal content.
  4. Accountability: Senior executives will be responsible for ensuring compliance with OSA duties.
  5. Content Removal: Providers must remove accounts run by or on behalf of terrorist organizations.
I appears that as per usual governance theater, the notion of responsibility has become for each "provider" of "on-line service" to be agents of government control.

"Trained" moderators, "proper" handling of content, "algorithmic" processing, an individual to 'suffer consequences' of the 'spread' of unwelcome information, and 'removing' the information others provide... I'll spare you the characterization we all might enjoin herein.

It is unlikely that this act will ever affect DI directly... but it can theoretically be used to interfere with our discussions which are not always of the "welcome information" variety in the UK.  It puts government 'staff' in the theoretical 'driver seat.'

Nevertheless; be welcome and well met here...

I can't wait to see the new you on the board... we've much to discuss.

PS - The creators of this virtual place are the heroes in my estimation.  DToM, TheShadowKnows (TSK), Djarums, are just a few of those who deserve thanks for our continued existence AA (After ATS)... but I humbly submit... the site is about all of us, not just them.  Our persistence depends on the entire community...

Very happy to see you've joined here.
TSK is the man responsible for putting together DI, and doing all the little things to make DI our new home.

Hurrah on your life changes!
I am really happy for you.  Sobriety rocks....proudly sober for about 20 years now.
Prayer did it for me.

Enjoy your time here, friend.

I’m especially appreciative of your post. As it puts pieces of the puzzle together. You were a humongous dick, when I was being a messenger to try to save ATS. It’s all documented there. Water under the bridge - amigo.

Accountably is key.

Thank you all for the kind messages. I hope to make my contributions valuable. I have some ideas which may evolve into threads.

With regards to the sobriety, prayer indeed did help but at times I am unsure exactly who or what I am praying to and exactly what the truth is. But that said, during and after prayer I feel a positive impact psychologically, which also materialises itself in remarkable ways.

I hope to find the time over the next few days to get stuck in, I do however have a 10 week old puppy which is taking up a lot of my time, I dare say this dog of mine (supposed to be "ours" but of course Dad is doing all the work!) is almost as hard work as a new born... at least you can put a nappy on a baby!!!

Welcome and14263!

I do remember you from ATS, well done on the 600+ days sober and I'm really glad you're in a better place. I can't say I remember you being an ass myself but I do know how toxic atmospheres can have us regurgitating vile bile, I'm happy you've put that behind you and continue to aspire to healthiness :)

Beer Awesome stuff! Congrats
