The Purpose Of A System Is What It Does.

Thought this was quite the fascinating video with an extremely simple but extremely profound premise.

Reckon James is definitely onto something with his 'POSIWID' outlook and he does present some rather eye-opening examples (especially on education).

Transcript

For those of us alive through the seventies and eighties reckon 'nobody' could mess things up so bad if things weren't intentionally designed that way (managed decline, controlled demolition etc.) and perhaps the system really is working exactly as designed lol.

Any thoughts or observations for or against 'POSIWID' are most welcomed - either way it's all a very healthy thought experiment.

Some point in the 80s/90s, 5am till about 8am, BBC2, open university programs.

Im sure that fella with the massive beard, standing next to the engine, was a regular... Thumbup

Fascinating.

I shoulda been an efficiency expert.

I have the natural ability to see how a system works — how each component connects with the next.

My brain sees everything in boxes and connects the boxes in the most efficient way to move forward. Like a computer.

Too bad I didn’t get a math genius along with it.

I don't think the purpose of a system is what it does, it's what it should do. Most of the times what any system does is not exactly what it should do or exactly how it should do it.

Also, we should never forget people's incompetence, it really exists everywhere.

As I don't know it, I cannot talk specifically about the US system, but here in Portugal, what I have noticed in the last 50 years or so is that there has been attempts at increasing "financial efficiency", disregarding the original purpose of "teaching".

My elder sister has worked as a professor in some occasions (the last one was last school year) and professors get big amounts of work that are not related to teaching.
The lower attention of the students doesn't help either.

No worries Annee - am glad you watched the whole video, it's rather uncanny that time and time again things keep on getting progressively worse (just follow any objective statistic).

Of course it's ideology rather than realism.

I suppose there is also the psychological factor to consider.

We are wired to notice threats more than improvements.

Combine that with the NEWS and modern media we are all spoon-fed on a daily basis.

And it amplifies negative events because that's what they tend to show us.

And that's what grabs attention.

So it's easy to build an impression that decline is universal and everything is getting worse...

My brain just cuts through the peripherals direct to the purpose.  Like a kid putting a jacket on.  My brain sees the mechanics required (like watching a programed robot).  Then add in the human factor like is the kid right-handed and age.  If kid is right-handed the right arm needs to go in first cuz that's the control factor.

The Iran war -- I need the real intelligence (what is the core factor)? What is it we want to control? The peripherals are just a distraction from the purpose. From a machine perspective the human factor is not relevant unless needed to attain the end goal.

Trump uses the human factor.  He has said he watches an audience to see what they react to.

My brain has a life of its own  Shocked2

I'm sorry -- I thought I was.

I just naturally see the flaw in systems.

I want to reference Manufacturing Consent, but I can't even stomach Chomsky anymore.
