Memory Palaces
#1
The Method of Loci is something that has been popping in my feeds lately.  It's a simple visualization technique where you associate information with locations.  You create a palace and in each room you store different information basically.  Afterwards you can walk around in your place to remember information.

It's also extensively utilized in esoteric practices.  The trick as always appears to be expectation of outcome and clear intent.

Visualization in Ritual Magic
Practitioners use mental imagery to create vivid scenes or symbols. This technique often involves invoking archetypal figures or elements (e.g., fire, water) to influence both the internal psyche and external reality.

Pathworking
A practice within Hermeticism and Kabbalah where a practitioner mentally journeys through the Tree of Life or other symbolic systems. Each path represents psychological states or spiritual truths, and the visualization acts as a means to internalize and embody the knowledge.

Astral Projection
While not specifically a memory enhancement technique, it involves creating detailed mental landscapes to explore other "planes" of existence. Some practitioners integrate memory palace principles to navigate these planes or recall their experiences afterward.

Sigil Crafting
In chaos magic, sigils are visual symbols charged with intent. Practitioners often combine these with mnemonic techniques to "store" the sigil's meaning subconsciously.

Geomancy and Sacred Geometry
The use of spatial arrangements (real or imagined) in symbolic ways. Some systems link these patterns with mnemonic devices to memorize and connect different layers of meaning.

Chanting and Mantras
Reciting sacred sounds or phrases, often tied to a rhythm or cadence, aids memory and alters consciousness. Visualization techniques are frequently combined with these to amplify the effect.

Dream Incubation
An ancient practice where practitioners consciously plant questions or problems in their minds before sleeping, using symbolic imagery to influence dream content for insight or recall.

Delving into the concepts and explaining technique, an amalgamation of pathwork, astral projection and skrying.
Quote:In this practice, you visualize an arched door, like the one in Jay’s image above, with a Major Arcana tarot card on it. Stepping through this door in your imagination leads you into the astral realm. The practice of deep, meditative visionary journeys is called “skrying in the spirit vision.” Tarot Pathworking on the Tree of Life is a structured approach to following a specific sequence of these astral journeys for spiritual development.

Don't do OOBE's kids. There is indeed lasting effects but they are mostly positive, I actually have research material ready for that thread.  Channeling is good too  Tongue
Quote:Some visualisations are not safe (e.g. ones that invite you to visualise going out of your body) and should not be attempted by the inexperienced. People often think that it’s all happening in your head and therefore you can visualise whatever you like with no consequences, but that is not necessarily the case. Magic (defined here as “the art of changing consciousness in accordance with will”) does have real effects, even if they’re only psychological effects.

Creating guardians are fun, best feed them or they eat you. There is also a concept of creating a "safe room" in a memory palace that you can retreat into and lock.  Like a proper vault.

I've seen this concept mentioned in many places (oddly, always in fiction; I've never come across anyone who does it in real life) and have been interested in it ever since I learned about it, but I've honestly never put too much effort into learning more.  Maybe I should... I used to have a much better memory, nearly photographic, when I was a kid, but now I don't think it's that much better than anyone else's memory.

I don't suppose anyone here has actually put the Memory Palace concept into practice to remember things successfully?  Like, I mean, a -lot- of things, lists and stuff of that nature, not just your mom's phone number.  I know in my own life, while I haven't ever tried this concept, I have found that it is easier for me to remember things when I can 'associate' them with something else.  I meet a lot of people in my employment, for example, and I'm able to remember names of people because I sometimes associate them with someone/something else.  As a few examples, I remember "Dexter"'s name because of the TV show (I sometimes joke with him asking if he's killed anyone today, lol), or that sort of thing.

So I can see the concept having potential, but I have never heard anyone talk about it from a first-hand experience.

Darn, I missed the reply sorry. With your "Dexter" example, I think we do this subconsciously al the time.

I would also love to hear how effective it is. All my attempts at a memory palace failed due to boredom previously. The older wiser version of me knows how to focus now.

Some rumors I heard was that you must go through the palace rooms in order. Another is that you eventually go mad through association.

Memory Palace has always seemed too cumbersome for practical use, for me.
When I memorise lots of information I make correspondences.

Using a system, in my case the Hebrew Tree of Life, you can retain lots of information in column form by having like things next to eachother that relate.
For example, the Sephira or sphere of Tiphareth, it's meaning is Beauty, colour is pink/rose , planet is the Sun, Roman God is Apollo, emotion is Love. etc etc

Besides a graphical framework, another helpful tool is mnemonics.
In memorising the order of the Zodiac for example,
A Tough Guy Can Leave etc
Aries Taurus Germini Cancer Leo
