Mystery fault takes undersea internet cable between Germany and Finland out of service

 An unexplained fault in an undersea telecommunications cable linking Finland and Germany has disrupted communication services, the company that runs the link said Monday.
 
The C-Lion1 cable that connects Helsinki to Rostock in Germany was built and is operated by Cinia, a state-controlled Finnish company.
 
Covering a distance of nearly 1,200 kilometers (730 miles), the cable is the only direct connection of its kind between Finland and central Europe and it runs alongside other key pieces of infrastructure, including gas pipelines and power cables.
 
It is unclear what caused the fault – Cinia said in a statement that it is still investigating the issue. However, the malfunction comes just weeks after the United States warned that it had detected increased Russian military activity around key undersea cables. Two US officials told CNN in September that the US believed Russia was now more likely to carry out potential sabotage operations on these critical pieces of infrastructure.
 
The warning came after a joint investigation by the public broadcasters of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, which reported in April 2023 that Russia had a fleet of suspected spy ships operating in Nordic waters as part of a program of potential sabotage of underwater cables and wind farms in the region.

I guess the idea is that if you can't win an election, then you can start a world war. I say this knowing full well that the Nord stream pipeline incident was conducted by the Ukrainians with help from the US. This is just sad at this point.

Sweden, Finland, warns residents to be ready for war

Sweden and Finland have all begun warning their residents to prepare for the possibility of war as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine rages on. 
Stockholm on Monday published its latest version of “In Case of Crisis or War,” a pamphlet instructing civilians on how to prepare for, and ride out, a national crisis that was last sent out in 2018.
 
The pamphlet, which has been issued five times since World War II, is now twice as long at 32 pages and focuses on war preparations as the Swedish government warns of the worsening situation in Ukraine.
 
“The security situation is serious and we all need to strengthen our resilience to face various crises and ultimately war,” said Mikael Frisell, director of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.
 
An estimated 5.2 million copies of the pamphlet are set to be delivered to Swedish households in the next two weeks, with the text available in multiple languages online.

The jest looks like just common sense stuff for winter time living.

 The text calls on citizens to be ready with a stockpile of food and emergency supplies, including baby food, medicine and hygiene products.

I don't think this book has anything to do with the "Russian (but we really know its Ukrainians) cable fault this morning.

 Helsinki warned that as of the last government survey in September, only 58% of Finns have adequate emergency supplies at home to ride out a crisis.
 
The warnings come after Norway published its own physical pamphlets earlier this year on how to manage by themselves for a week in the event of a national crisis, including war.

If you are worried
We live in a time of threats that can create anxiety and uncertainty. Here's some advice on how to can handle your anxiety:
• Talk to relatives, friends, neighbors or any association about your concern. It can make you feel less alone.
• Get involved, for example by helping others to strengthen its preparedness. It can give a sense of meaning.
• Take care of your health. Good food, sleep and exercise decrease stress and make you feel better.
• Limit your flow of negative news about the state of the world. Find a level that's right for you. Allow time for things like makes you feel good.
• Contact healthcare if you feel very unwell.

Talking to children about crisis and war
Children of different ages express anxiety in different ways. Be present and attentive to your child.
• Explain to the child what that happens.
• Listen and open up to conversation.
• Only tell what you know is true, avoid too many details.
• Do you not have answers to all questions is it good to say that.
• Do things with the child that takes the focus off the worries.
