No builder in the world builds things by taking one brick at a time to a structure and setting it in place and then going back for another one. With 30,000 laborers you would have them working all four sides of the pyramid simultaneously. It's big enough that you can easily have 100-300 crews (their crews were broken up into groups of 100 and subgroups of 10) working on each side at the same time. So when you have 20,000 men organized into crews of 10, you can move 2,000 blocks into place every 15 minutes. That means you can build it in 1,000 days (go ahead, do the math.) That's a bit over 3 years. However, the work was only done during flood season (so 1/3rd of the year), so that's an easy 10 years with time to build the other things like the temples that are in front of the pyramid. So one has around 135 years to work with. With a deviation for Djedefre, since we don't know if and how much of a pyramid he built. This assumes the reigns are reported accurately -which is questionable. The other point is the volume based number of 2.3 million doesn't take into account part of the ridge being incorporated into Khufu's tomb, the gypsum mortar and the general sloppiness of the core stones. Byrd is there any estimation of how much masonry work was occurring in Memphis in this time period? Yes indeed -- there were three generations (and 4 pharaohs) before Khufu that built pyramids, so, contrary to many beliefs, they didn't just "emerge" without any predecessors. Wikipedia says that Djedefre's pyramid was finished but was apparently the first big one to be harvested. We also didn't get into the "the big blocks are only on the bottom levels; higher up, they're much smaller" discussion, did we. And yeah, the 2.3 million stones is just an estimate. They also seemed to fill some areas with sand -- and then there's the voids (Big Void, two smaller ones) in the Great Pyramid, so it's not really a solid block. I'll see what I can find on the temples in Memphis.

Yes one wonders how much sand (they did find some in 1986, a French scientist found a layer of sand lining the interior walls of the Great Pyramid while searching for hidden chambers. This sand, composed of 99% quartz, was found behind the stones of the Queen's Chamber and in the passage leading to it). That and the estimated 500,000 tons of gypsum mortar too

Not that I'm aware of, but they were definitely busy since this (Old Kingdom) was the turning point where they started building with stone instead of mudbrick for the big temples. Djedefre's pyramid was finished or nearly so, according to Wikipedia.

How many points do I get for stating that reading the rating info in the OP made my head hurt? That is a confusing rating system...am I supposed to memorize it?
