Greetings DI,
I rented the remake of Nosferatu last night. I thought it was good, but not great. If you're a fan of Dracula or vampire lore then it's worth checking out. Let's get into Roma's review...
I thought the cinematography was great and the characters themselves were well cast. They also did a really nice job of teasing the appearance of Count Orlock.
The story itself was based on Bram Stoker's Dracula (the book) which we've seen a number of times before. Unfortunately, they left out some of the best parts of the book like the White Lady. They also changed the ending (more on this later) and you miss out on the whole race to Transylvania when they pursued Dracula after he fled London. The Coppola film touched on this but nothing ever captured the intensity like the book.
Also, the characters themselves were very transparent to the point where I don't even remember their names (except for Orlock). All I saw was was Renfield, Van Helsing, Jonathan, Mina and so on. And there was no Quincy! Lol.
There were a couple nods to previous films. The Count's appearance was part Max Schreck and partly how Dracula was described in the novel. There was also a reference to the Coppola film.
The part I didn't like is that they portrayed Lilly Rose Depp's character as a female Christ, sacrificing herself to save humanity. To me, it's just more Hollywood pushing the woke agenda.
The film is a little on the spooky side and there's some good scares. If you're a fan of the genre then I'd say it's worth checking out.
Cheers.

I watched the trailer for this multiple times at my local shopping center and found it a bit confusing..., like most trailers. I'll probably wait for it to become free on my Amazon account.
If you like different adaptions of Dracula, here's a pretty good one made by the BBC in 2006. It was only for TV, so it's not too long at 90 mins. As it was for TV, it has a good balance of gore and suspense and is an easy watch.
Here's the Wiki page... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracula_(2006_film)
And the whole movie on Youtube...

Thanks Encia, I haven't seen that one.
There is another BBC adaptation of Dracula with Claes Bang in the title role. It was 3 episodes and on the whole it was pretty disappointing. Episode 2 is worth watching as it's a different (or more detailed) take on the voyage of the Demeter.
If you enjoy reading there is a book called The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It's a combination of actual history and Lore and leans into Bram Stoker's novel heavily if I recall. Of course, the original novel is worth reading and there are parts of the book that have never been filmed.
Cheers.

I haven't read the OP's review yet. But I just won my bid on DVD of this latest 2024/2025 Nosferatu so looking forward to watching it and adding it to my 'vampire box' film collection.
For my money the best telling of the Dracula/Nosferatu story is the 1970s film by Werner Herzog of 'Nosferatu'
So atmospheric, gothic and aesthetically pleasing.

A commenter is spot on ,the whole film you feel like you are in a trance, a dream.
The soundtrack is great.
Great use of Wagner das Rheingold too.

Finally watched this, this weekend. It was good. Not great but a solid maybe 7/10.
The acting was very well done, especially the Thomas/Jonathan character.
Lilly-Rose was a tad bit over the top but I think that's with most young actors and actresses.
I really enjoyed the dreamlike atmosphere, especially the first half of the film.
It went from maybe an 8/10 to a 7/10 about half way through, for me, as it got a little extreme in the plot, I think it wasn't necessary. Like the whole ripping open the tomb and lying there thing. Also I thought the 'sacrifice' of the female Mina/whatsername character was a bit hamfisted.
I did enjoy the appearance of the vampire as literally a revenant.
Reccomended.
But - why do they keep telling the same Stoker story 3 or 4 times now? Nosferatu 1920s Nosferatu 1970s Bram Stokers Dracula 1990s this one. I am sure there are some in the 50s I am missing.
They need to write new vampire stories, not telling the same one over and over.
I really enjoyed Byzantium for being a fresh and unique take on a vampire film.

If you want a different take on vampire lore I strongly suggest reading The Passage by Justin Cronin. It was absolutely phenomenal. Someone said it was the best Steven King story not written by Steven King.
Be warned, Fox did a made for TV version and like most things Fox does it was terrible.
I recommended this Trilogy to a few people and they all raved about it. Cronin's writing style is concise and easy to read and the world he creates is the thing of nightmares. No glittering Edward Cullen or whining Lestat vampires here.
Cheers.
