On a personal note, I'd give my eye teeth for a genuine Dragunov!  I'd love to own one of those things!  I've got rifles which will shoot much further and way more accurately, but just the "Cool Factor" alone makes me want one.  "Coolness" just drips off one of those things!

If the SVD was a hot rifle, as in reported as stolen) then I can see a dimwit swapping out the stock for an aftermarket hunting rifle styled stock. As for the magazine, why have that many rounds if he was only going to shoot Trump. I mean he should have known a shoot-out with the Feds and Local Police wasn't going to happen, he'd be killed.

Since Florida has the rifle right now, I hope they use that technique to pull up the filed off numbers and see where the rifle came from.

The rifle in the picture has a magazine designed to hold a 39mm cartridge.  The SVD cartridge is a 54mm cartridge.  The pictured magazine (the one inserted into the rifle) is not capable of taking a 54mm cartridge (it's too long).  The SVD was never chambered to fire a 39mm cartridge.  This is how you know it is not an SVD, regardless of any other modifications which may have been done to it.

Edit - Even though both rifles have a 7.62mm barrel, the (39mm) SKS cartridge is too short to be fired in the (54mm) SVD chamber.  The receiver wouldn't close against the back of the case.  And, if by some chance the extractor managed to hold the round up against the receiver (as a result of it being a rimmed cartridge, thus the "R" designation) to where the firing pin would impact the primer when the bolt locked, well, I feel sorry for whomever is holding it when this happens because the rifle will more than likely explode due to a massive over-pressure in the 15mm headspace between the cartridge shoulder and the chamber wall.  I've seen an AR go Kaboom with less than 0.1mm too much headspace (like 0.05mm) and it was catastrophic!  With 15mm headspace that thing would blow up like a hand grenade.

Sure it could be some Jack Bauer 24'esque type conspiracy where the Deep State is trying to get Trump killed. Nothing would surprise me with the candidates that the 2 parties have offered the country over the past 2 and upcoming terms.

Then again the real world has a boring way of getting involved in scenarios .

Failed Trump assassin's vantage point was no secret – paparazzi have staked out tree line for years
Quote:The tree line at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, has been known for years to be a vantage point for photographers looking to catch a candid glimpse of the former president and other VIPs.
Still, suspected failed assassin Ryan Wesley Routh was able to camp out there for nearly 12 hours Sunday with a rifle aimed at the course, according to a federal affidavit. He even brought snacks.

Trump is known to frequent the course when staying at his Mar-a-Lago resort about 15 minutes away. And even though the visit wasn't on the president's schedule, anyone staking out the area could have been tipped off to his arrival by his motorcade.

"There have been previous individuals who have taken pictures of the former president while he's golfing," said Dave Aronberg, the state attorney for the 15th Judicial Circuit, which covers Palm Beach County. "They've gone through the shrubs and been able to poke a camera through the fencing. You would think that perhaps maybe they would consider someone scoping the perimeter."

Photographers routinely announce their presence to the Secret Service and are well versed in where they can get a good line of sight, the New York Post reported. They are rarely asked to leave, an unnamed photo agency source told the paper.

Which kind of begs the question of why no one else saw the assassin there? If those Paparazzi have been known to use it, and Trump right now is a very hot topic, then are you telling me that not a single Paparazzi was trying to take a picture there? I wonder if any Paparazzi were chased off by Feds so that the assassin wouldn't be disturbed.

If no one was looking there until someone looked its not that hard to see how he was there for 12 hours.

I think the fact that its been known to be a vulnerable spot for years should be something that anyone associated with Trump's Security should consider a failure

Ryan Wesley Routh is a patsy groomed by the deep state to carry out a hit on Donald Trump says Ex-CIA Michael Scheuer.
There are just to many indicators pointing to Routh being sponsored by some party to kill Trump. First class airplane ticket from Hawaii bought by a dude who makes $3000 a month doing roofing..... that monthly salary must include all the time he was globe trotting trying to recruit mercenaries to fight for Ukraine.

The deep state wants Trump out of the picture or their house of cards may come to a devastating fall down event. The weapon he had was an SKS .... I owned 2 and they are more accurate that any AK I have ever shot or owned.

Further information on the rifle in question. Though this came from the FBI to the news outlets so who knows.
Assault rifle allegedly used by Ryan Wesley Routh in attempt to kill Trump revealed (nypost.com)
Quote:The alleged gunman accused of trying to assassinate Donald Trump at his Florida golf course had 11 rounds loaded in his assault rifle, federal prosecutors said Monday — as they revealed the first close-up photo of the weapon.

The image of the Soviet-designed SKS rifle that was found stashed in Ryan Wesley Routh’s alleged sniper’s nest at the West Palm Beach golf course on Sept. 15 was included in a detention memo filed Monday.

The rifle has been modified with a detachable magazine, a modern stock and a scope to make it more accurate to shoot at long range.

The serial number on the rifle was “obliterated and unreadable,” prosecutors alleged.

Routh’s fingerprint was also allegedly found on the weapon, the court papers state.

I like how it says "The rifle has been modified with a detachable magazine, a modern stock and a scope to make it more accurate to shoot at long range." yet the scope is taped down. Sure "accurate", but whatever if this is the rifle that was used it tells us that the FBI is now involved with the evidence handling of the case and not the Florida officials anymore, and it tells us that getting information might be a bit harder then it should be.

There was that note the was released too talking about how Routh was offering 150,000 to anyone who completed what he was doing. Has this money been frozen yet, or is it still out there for others to try and grab? I mean with this cash rumored to be out there it's almost a certainty that others are going to try and assassinate Trump just for the money, not just because of politics.

Did Routh actually have $150K? He was a part-time roofer in Hawaii. Where did the money for his trips to the Ukraine come from?

Customs and Border Protection asked him that the last time he entered the US. He claimed his ex-wife pays for things. He was then flagged as suspicious, but  Homeland Security never responded.
