I'm glad you added the backstory because I was struggling with the subtext.
I love watching competition sailing and have followed the America's Cup since the early 2000s; the Louis Vuitton Cup being the most recent event. So, my mind just stayed in sailing mode whilst reading your work. All the while knowing there was more too it, but couldn't pin it down.
The story that inspired your poem is pretty dramatic and frightening and you captured its essence perfectly.
