Oar Doom Fish Porn

Another Earthquake fish in San Diego County! The first one was found in LA Jolla Cove and the new one about 15 miles north in Encinitas.

We still haven't received the last fish's doomsday yet. But the fish was found adjacent to the same fault, which I guess you could draw conclusions from. The Rose Canyon portion of The Newport–Inglewood–Rose Canyon–Descanso–Agua Blanca Fault Zone.

It's not the most slip heavy fault like The San Andreas, San Jacinto, or Elsinore Faults, but its the 4th in parallel running faults that perpetually threaten our existence.

There was a six point something in 1800s and seven something 300 years ago. But it's not that active, and only recently started getting considered hazardous and significantly planned for.

The most often played out (and computed) scenario is a Loma Prieta strength 6.9 that occurs, rather coincidentally, a few miles offshore from where this doom fish was found.

I guess a watch fault never slips. The ground just doesn't move here. A little bit about 14 years ago, but it's really lulled everyone to sleep since. Almost too asleep. Nothing like the early 90s. Today, you'd never know there's a ring of fire here.

I'm starting to doubt the prophetic power of dead Oarfish.

Quote:In traditional Japanese legend, the belt fish or doomsday fish (Regalecus glesne) is known as “ryugu no tsukai,” which literally means “messenger from the palace of the sea dragon god.” People believed that the belt fish emerged from the depths of the ocean to warn of an earthquake. Although scientists emphasize that there is no scientific basis for such statements, this myth is firmly rooted in the territory of the island states, and in 2011, it caused quite a stir when two dozen oarfish immediately washed ashore a few months before Japan was hit by the most catastrophic earthquake and the resulting tsunami that wreaked havoc on the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant. Coincidence? More likely, there’s something about these wonderful fish that we don’t understand yet.

So we can probably expect something to immediately happen in San Diego in a few months or so. Got it.

At least there's no nuclear power plants left to melt down and lie about.

The highlight for everyone will be the coastal La Jolla properties that fall into the sea. Plus the fault goes literally under a major freeway and rail line for about 12 miles, so that would be interesting if it was strong enough for a surface rupture in Rose Canyon itself.

We're not Alaska, Caltrans doesn't have the immidiacy or let's face it, competency, to recover that mess like they did in the 80s and 90s. It would be more annoying. And of the three major coastal metro areas we are the least prepared. The ground barely moves, and when it does ever so slightly, people freak out because so little happens.

No terramoto thus far.

With having one found in late August and one found in mid November when does the doom warning expire? That fault has an 18% chance in the next 30 years of 6.7 plus. At what point does the doom prophecy end and normal statistics resume its predictive dominance? It's so rare it may deserve a longer window, like a year.

Man I hope the omens are wrong...

This particular eventuality is one I wish we could actually prepare for.

But you can't be prepared for that magnitude of disaster.

Oar Fish have an uncanny rate of appearing before such things... I wonder if those long sleek bodies are more attuned to the precursors of seismic events.

Could be chemical in nature. Gasses coming up from some movement. A big current of electricity would probably also mix up some chemicals or just effect them directly.

I enjoy Oar Doom Fish with Sun Doom, char grilled.

My complete novice look on the USGS site seems to show the vast majority of earthquakes in the last 48 hours seem to be on the Pacific plate, the  Cocos plate, and the Juan De Fuca plate.

Lets its hope this tectonic activity is just releasing tension and not building it near highly populated areas or it might Juan de Fuca an area hard in the next 6 months
