Naval Carrier operations
#1
Some bad stuff where people survived or died.

Quote:There's a saying in Naval Aviation: "There are no new mishaps, just new people doing the same old mishaps." But Naval Aviation safety does not buy that notion and operates under the premise that if you're aware of what the old mishaps are, then you won't repeat them.

Much of what's in this episode is from the Naval Safety Center's archives, footage that has never been widely seen publicly before. It's presented in memory of those who paid the ultimate price in pursuit of carrier aviation capability and the freedom it provides.

Well all I can say is that the act of taking off and landing on a short runway aboard a moving ship is going to be inherently dangerous. It’s amazing enough that they have have figured it out enough to do it efficiently and effectively.

Scary stuff.

If it’s hot, wet and sticky and it’s not yours, don’t touch it!

A Navy Captain friend (retired) who worked at the same airline used to say there were no bad Naval aviators as all the bad ones were at the bottom of the sea. He was a great golfer and tennis buddy of mine and mostly FOS for we had to fire a new Naval Aviator after extra hours training and IOE because he could not land an MD-80 airliner safely..  [Image: naughty.gif]

As a kid I got to fly off the USS Independence. It was pretty cool, for a civilian.

Long story...

A Naval Aviator friend of mine said, " Now days landing on the CV is much safer and easier. Something called 'Magic Carpet' makes this possible . Students don’t even have to carrier qual during flight training. What a bunch of pussies. "

I replied, "The entire aviation industry is going to push button flying. Glad we did our gig when talent and expertise counted for something."
We both agreed that the WW2 guys had it much worse than anyone getting to land on an angle decked Carrier.

Hard to talk about how dangerous carrier operations are without mentioning the USS Forrestal.
Mayhem
Chaos
Carnage
They make every new recruit in the Navy watch this video before firefighter training, which is now mandatory for everyone in that branch.
