I think the idea of evil data gathering arises from the early marketing of the "new" internet.
Buzzwords and people's eyes aglow with "modern" tech making such strides.... etc.
But no one told the marketeers that the concept around the entire design was simply and directly to eliminate the need to be "with" someone to share data...
It was never about... "unless they meet certain exclusionary criteria," or "we" (whomever) don't want you to have it. The answer to that was simple... then, don't post it.
(I've seen analysis that showed, long ago, that "the internet" could never be "secure" algorithmic cryptography notwithstanding. It simple logic... any data, if available, will be 'cracked' as long as you're willing to apply resources to the task... don't make it available.)
Commercial demands forced layer upon layer of code to accommodate their mandate (if it doesn't make money we wont support it.) Money, banks, gambling... the real reason, in many peoples' minds, that the internet must exist.
Not the information, not anything human... just money...
and guess who took control of it?... Think money.
