Strange viewpoint that just came to me: it's not we people who are lost. It's all the things of the world. The material. It moves around, is mined, made, sold, held, used, given, abandoned, found, repurposed, forgotten, buried, decayed, and dissolved to begin its cycle again. Whirring around the world. We're just visiting here as temporary caretakers to guide and shape its journey. We arose from the dirt in our physical selves to make the journey of dirt and elements more interesting.

Now I'm thinking about the book Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins. Good one. He anthropomorphizes objects and tells the stories of their journey. Read it some time.

My point is, what use is inspiration, when the work of the material shows us the path so clearly? Stewardship of objects, and helping one another along the way. Sometimes the simple work fills the gaps, no fancy metaphysics or theory of higher purpose necessary.

Just a thought that occurred to me while taking a break from sorting and packing the detritus of my brother's estate, making little time capsules of the aggregate material for my nephew to sort through someday. Things find their own paths, sometimes all we can do is be active and diligent workers, and witness.
