I keep a lot of canned goods { home canning not store bought } in my storm shelter. It's 8 feet underground and stays cool all Summer. It can be over 100 outside and it'll still be 65 - 70 in there.

It is a good process that works well.

Lots of people dig holes in the beach to keep their liquid refreshments cool, covered and hidden. It’s a good example of evaporative cooling for sue.

Tecate
If it’s hot, wet and sticky and it’s not yours, don’t touch it!

The weather. As the humidity nears 100%, which it does for long periods in the summer where I am, it stops working. Also, mineral and biological buildup in the sand. You would have to clean or replace the sand often to keep it working. To clean the sand you would have to put it in running water for hours and stir it often. A running stream would be nice for this. Then boil or dry the sand and pots to kill the biological residue.

If you have a running stream, you already have a nice cooling system though.

Nice idea in some climates for short term cooling but it doesn't work everywhere and is labor intensive.

Unglazed pottery jugs have been used for centuries in the Alentejo region of Portugal, where the temperatures can reach more than 42º C (around 108º F), and that's enough to keep the water inside cold.

Not to mention I love all the stone housing in Portugal and lots of Europe. They need to stop importing the American method of 'building' with the particle board and plastic. It will just overheat.  Concrete or stone walls for the win.
Very cool in summer.
