From the old to the new
#1
I was an Above Top Secret lurker for over 20 years. Shame to see its finally offline.

However, I have to say I love the retro feel of this forum. Feels very hackerish and really harks back to the roots of what ATS was all about.

As an aside, I have a complete backup of the ATS website (all forums, threads and so on). Its currently just for my personal reference as there was some great threads on there, but perhaps in time it would be worth sticking it onto a torrent. Although, I'd like to avoid copyright infringement issues/legalities...

Just make sure to get mobile mode working ASAP, as I imagine this is stopping a lot of people from getting properly involved!

HI.

If all the ATS site info is saved but the site is down and doesn't come back up, isn't it possible to buy the domain when it is up for grabs and reboot a new version of ATS from the ground up using the saved info and the work and knowledge of the superb members here?

Wisdom knocks quietly, always listen carefully. And never hit "SEND" or "REPLY" without engaging brain first.

How large would such a torrent be?
It would need to be chunks of like a gigabyte each?
3 terabytes?
10?

I feel for anyone who remained on board the ATS sinking ship to the end.

I also love that retro Deny Ignorance look. Welcome to the growing Deny Ignorance community.

It's not huge - a few hundred gb unzipped. It's a static copy, so extracting all the threads and repopulating a database is fairly straightforward.

However, its more the legalities that I'm concerned about. I don't own the copyrights, so right now I just have an archive of it (which I think is allowed), but I'd be hesitant to publish it.

Wow, amazing! Have you considered Bibliotheca Pleyades? They are like a niche way back machine/internet archive for exactly the kind of topics that used to be posted on ATS. They seem to be pretty relaxed about copyright issues - see disclaimers in link above.

Might be worth getting into contact with them about this.
