Harris event "business break-in," a question
#1
During one of Kamala Harris' campaign events, a group of individuals who reportedly were "dressed like Secret Service agents" took it upon themselves to break in to a closed, locked salon.

When they entered, they were under surveillance by the internal security monitoring cameras, albeit only long enough to see one of them stand on a chair and place tape over the camera lens.  The store owner claims they were there for a few hours, specifically in the bathroom; after which they left the store unlocked, without uncovering the camera.

The store owner was apparently put off by the chain of events, and asked for an explanation... but until now ,it seems answers were not forthcoming.  The story was picked up by media, and this story offers up sparse details, but includes something which I'm curious about.

From FOXNews: Secret Service hints it wasn’t behind salon break-in during Kamala Harris campaign event

I'm uncertain about the idea that the Secret Service has chosen to "hint" anything... politicians "hint," enforcement agencies deal in, and report, facts.  But that aside, there is another small line that interests me...

"The U.S. Secret Service works closely with our partners in the business community to carry out our protective and investigative missions," USSS spokeswoman Melissa McKenzie said in a statement.

McKenzie said the Secret Service has been in contact with Powers since the July 27 incident.

"We hold these relationships in the highest regard and our personnel would not enter, or instruct our partners to enter, a business without the owner’s permission," McKenzie said, stopping short of saying who was responsible...

I couldn't help but wonder about "... or instruct our partners to enter a business without the owner's permission."

What "partners?"  If it were local law enforcement there would be no reason to conceal, or otherwise withhold the actors.

Exactly how "loose" is the operation of the Secret Service now... do they even know what their "partners" are doing?  What if this had been part of an illegal operation, an assassination plot, or a foreign operation?  Just how 'casual' is the "contracting relationship" for "security" services,... casual enough that they are not really "secure" at all?  In fact I fault the reporters for not asking "to whom they were referring," or how this represents effectively securing the VP's safety.

I include this within this forum because I am aware it cannot be considered "not political" given the time and place in which it is happening...

Quote:The U.S. Secret Service has hinted it was not involved in the break-in of a hair salon during a Kamala Harris campaign event in Massachusetts late last month.

The allegations of Secret Service involvement arose after the salon’s owner, Alicia Powers, alleged that agents put duct tape over her security cameras and broke into her building by picking the lock.

I like how it specifically states "Hinted" so that they can't get called out for lying later on in front of Congress. I guess they haven't learned that people are both tired of and on to their workplay.

Well that formal response from the agency clears everything up for me.
Personally and this is just for research I would really be more interested if an "upper decker" situation was afoot.

I almost thought that this was people acting like Secret Service agents, but then realized that if that was the case then why wasn't this reported as a robbery? If it wasn't Secret Service agents, then wouldn't the Secret Service want to also know who is going around acting like them and causing issues like this? Instead, they can't come out and say that they had nothing to do with this.

It's like the Secret Service has no idea what they are doing to the point of not knowing if they broke laws, did their jobs, or even who is or isn't an agent. If this event and a failed assassination attempt has shown is that maybe an interservice purge should take place in the Secret Service, if not a complete cutting of the Department altogether. US Marines can expand their White House duties to full time guarding the President instead of the Secret Service, and the US Marshals can take over the investigation parts for the Treasury Department.

Thinking about it further, even if it wasn't a robbery, it was "breaking and entering" so it should be in a crime report.

I think the political appointments who 'set the tone and objectives' in the service... someone has some answering to do about what this was.  No "hinting" - just answers.

For reasons I can't really get into without pissing someone off, I like your idea about the Marines and the US Marshals being better suited to the role of presidential security... except then every sad wanna-be politician and their retinues will demand it too... and that could get really ugly... because in theory, no Marine or Marshal is going to sell their soul for the benefit of some political party or club... would they?  They can't be "bought and sold" so easily as so-called "partisans"... at least I would like to believe that.

I wish that was the case, but those who served in Panama back in the day know better. That being said, when those type of people get noticed they usually get transferred before anything happens.

I'm sure a lot of political types wouldn't want US Marines providing protection for themselves since on average a Marine isn't going to "look the other way" or "ignore that incident". Most likely those types of politicians would vote for allowing private security which should come out the politician's pocket, but I'm sure they'll use taxpayer cash for it.

It's funny when you look at what we have and what we need. Like the CIA could be dumped and those jobs handed to the US Army Intelligence like how pre-WWII Army Signal Corps was the ones that handled all that CIA stuff. Same goes for the FBI. Dump them and beef up the US Marshal Service and allow local law enforcement to utilize the former FBI labs and State's AG office should be working cases between states.

Alot of wasted money and corruption could be cut by just dumping Departments that are more headaches than results.

I thought it really was Secret Service and that the Secret Service apologized.  (which wasn't enough .. I think the woman should have sued them)

At the initial time of the report it wasn't even acknowledged by the Secret Service that this ever happened... just an allegation by a store owner...
