I would like to anticipate all the tongue-in-cheek stuff...
This might be fallout from all the UAP fluff and media attention... they're finally trying to actually "find" these "IR-only" objects that haunt them.
This is actually a camera-suite that might be useful against stealth-tech.
They really get a rise out of frying a wild boar on a ridge... ooh, ooh, new one... energy weapons testing.
