You've all heard about it - the all-female Origin flight crew that went up with 6 women for 11 minutes to the edge of space and then returned. Katy Perry, Gayle King, Lauren Sanchez, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, Kerrianne Flynn.
My rant ...
First of all, it wasn't a 'flight crew'. A crew are people who are on board and doing work and flying the machine. This was a flight with six PASSENGERS. They did nothing. And that's fine if they did nothing, because they were just tourists, just passengers. But don't call them 'crew'.
Second, the cabin had microphones and everyone on Earth heard everything the women said and did. Katy Perry, Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez screamed bloody murder all while the takeoff was taking place, and then screamed again during reentry and especially when the parachutes deployed.
Gayle King had done an interview before hand and did the usual 'this is important for women' kind of thing about this being an all female passenger manifest. (no it's not important for women, but of course this is what she was pushing). So with this being so important for women ... she and Katy Perry and Lauren Sanchez spent their time screaming like 10 year old girls going on Space Mountain in Disney World. I'm sure any real female astronauts who were watching were thinking ... what the hell?
It was EMBARRASSING for women. Man up ladies!
And third, the 11 minute ride cost $300,000 each. I"m sure none of them paid for it themselves. I'd bet a box of donuts on that one. I suppose it doesn't matter who pays for it .... but it's annoying that it costs that much money and someone has it to throw away on screaming ninny celebrities for an 11 minute joyride when the money could be used for so many other good things for people. I suppose if those women weren't such ninnies I wouldn't have minded as much.
There ... that's my rant. (and for those who don't know .. I"m a woman).
I would take that flight in a heartbeat, and I don't mind telling you, I'd probably scream like a little girl. Bezos, Musk, Branson, they launch their rockets because they can. I think NASA has been left behind, mostly due to lack of innovation and funding. I am glad for any wealthy people who step up and push the edge. I very much enjoyed the post-landing drama. It was billed as the capsule landing at 1 MPH. Bullshit. I have done more than a little bit of skydiving. That landing rang those women's bell. I would guess it as about 15 mph, or perhaps a little more. I look forward to the video from inside the spacecraft. I love that Katy Perry was on board. I really like her energy. I hope she makes her experience into music. I, also have once in my life kissed the ground after a flight. That takes a certain amount of humble to do.
