If the Eldridge was being degaussed, where did the power come from? German u boats could not degause themselves.They had a large installation at a dock for that. And a u boat or American submarine had much more generating capacity per ton of steel hull than any surface vessel. Surface vessels put the power directly to use by drive shafts not charging batteries.
If it were another experiment as mentioned, about fooling German torpedos, how do we know all the ships involved were wired up the same? The magnetic fields would not need to be strong enough to degause the hull for that. And the Eldridge may have had a coil or two hooked up wrong. Or perhaps a few tubes in the wrong sockets. Ether would change the operation of the experiment.
There are too many loose ends to prove anything about this anomaly that occured. Too many witnesses no longer alive.
