Consecutive Replies??

I write these posts not as criticism, but just as observations of things which could be improved or things which seem awkward (I say this because I looked and most of the posts on the first page here are from me, but I'm honestly not complaining).  Also, I didn't see this one posted already, and if it was, then please excuse me.  Anyway, I suspect TSK is already aware of this, but the way two consecutive replies from the same poster works seems kind of wonky. 

For example, If a person replies to a poster, it shows up as a quote from the person being replied to and then the reply.  No problem there.  However, if the same person replies to another poster (before anyone else replies on the thread), the subsequent reply shows up as an edit to the first reply and just appends the 2nd reply to the first one.  Depending on if the person hit the reply button or just did a generic reply determines whether a quote from the 2nd person shows up.  Is there a way to get to consecutive replies to show up as two separate posts?

The reason for asking this is, depending on the length of each reply, it can be difficult for the person being replied to to spot their reply unless the person replying separates each reply with some sort of a demarcation (I use a series of line spaces with "." in each to separate the two replies).  Without some kind of a delineation between two replies it is difficult to see when someone replies to you because it might be buried in a reply to another poster.  It's not a huge deal, but it's kind of awkward.  I've experimented around with different features, but I don't see anything which can eliminate this without some sort of manual intervention (such as the inserted line spaces with a random character on each line, as noted above).

Is there a way to prevent this from happening?  Or, is there some way to change how consecutive replies are formatted?

If it's an intentional space saving measure, then please just disregard my request, but if database table space is not an issue then I think it would be helpful if this could be fixed somehow.

I noticed that too and I think its a neat feature I suppose it is useful for space saving as you say and I see your point that someone might miss a quoted reply although I think that they get a little alert bubble notification whenever someone quotes them? I think its deliberate because of two things first some people i've noticed will read a long thread and reply by reply quote and respond and end up with like 7 posts in a row that are all little response snippets and as you mention it takes alot of space. And second I think that sometimes nastyfolk do that deliberate to bury a reply they dont like they will spam snippy replies until theres a new page in the thread and its a distraction technique, so this works around that

Also in the meantime, that's been brought up here before, and I believe the term is "post-combining". It's likely just some setting in the forum software that can either be selected/deselected, but as UB was alluding, there may or may not be active and substantial reasoning as to why it is currently selected (I don't recall), and I suppose it doesn't do any harm in bumping it up again.

Maybe a visible line in-between replies when they get put up might be good.

Yep, I noticed this and thought I’d done something wrong. So I went back and deleted the post that got posted in a post to another person as I didn’t want to reply to 2 people in the same post. Bust same thing happened when I tried to do it again. I thought it was a glitch but also thought maybe I did something wrong because it never happened again. Mystery solved lol.

You're welcome, but I was just guessing. I've never worked with forum software before. I imagine it as web-based, but I suppose it could also be software-based.

Back around 2000 I dabbled with a few things with the exception of PHP and MySQL which I recall was gaining more traction at the time – everything I did was all Microsoft.

I was mostly playing around with C++ and MFC, and I had web-based forms that would call executables and could create MS Jet databases and HTML on the fly among other things.

My ISP wanted an application that would process his RADIUS server log files. It was a bit crude at first, but it got much better over time.

The post-combining didn't really bother me much except for the fact that I always had to do an edit after and my post would get stamped with an (undeserving) edit tag because I was always adding an extra line of space between the combined posts.

Curious...Wonder why I got an alert on this reply but your reply was to TSK.  Equally odd, I got an applause, but TSK thanked you in his reply (not me).  I'm thinking he meant to give the applause to you instead.  Pretty sure I'm persona non grata around here anymore these days.  Oh well.

I believe you get an alert whenever you participate in any thread. You are automatically subscribed to it. You can unsubscribe from any topic if you don't want to receive alerts, either by selecting that choice at the bottom of the page before you post or after by going through your subscriptions.

For the applause, I don't know.
