Comet C/2023 A3 and More!
#1
Hello,

This past weekend I managed to get a decent shot of our cosmic guest! Comet C/2023 A3 - I also tossed in a few others I recently imaged as a bonus! I hope you enjoy.

Images were taken with a 50mm Triplet apochromatic scope. IMX462 sensor. 250mm ( F5 ) The nebula photos were taken with an Ha and OIII narrowband filter. Comet was 2min exposure. The 3 nebula below were 40min to 2 hours.

Next is the Crescent Nebula. Its an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus, about 5000 light-years away from Earth.

Next is the Eagle Nebula, commonly known as "The Pillars of Creation". It consists of three towers of gas and dust standing light-years tall.  Inside those dusty spires, stars are being born!

Finally, We have The Elephants Trunk Nebula. The Nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the much larger ionized gas region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light years away from Earth.

Thanks! I hate to admit it, but I control my telescope with an iPad. So after its leveled and to temp. I sit inside the warm house and slew it to targets LOL Armchair astronomy!

As in my first photo of a comet I wasn't able to see it, but pointing the camera in the right direction worked. Wink

Hey! You got it though, that's all that matters! I'm in New England. Bortle 4 sky (if anyone is familiar with that scale). So relatively dark considering what's around me. We were barely able to spot the comet with our naked eyes. With binocular's it was very vivid and surreal.

Those are fantastic!!  Great job!!  And thanks for posting!

Do you stack multiple images for the pictures you posted, or were these only single images?

edit - Probably kind of hard to stack a 2 hour image because it'd be daylight after a couple images, but maybe the shorter ones.

I'm glad you asked!

I usually run either 10sec subs or 20sec subs. If its breezy or during a full moon. Its 10sec subs to avoid rejections. If its very dark and still, I will use 20sec subs to pull out a bit more detail. I then use Siril to manually stack the .FIT files. I wrote a script that upscales the image and also does frame rejection. If a satellite goes through the frame, or a breeze makes the stars fuzzy. It will auto reject. Makes my life a bit easier.
