Cockatoos doing the double dip
#1
I know that parrots, apart from being very clever, have a sense of taste and are able to distinguish between sweet, salty, sour and bitter flavours; even to the point of having preferences.

This experiment I came across seems to demonstrate that the above is true… and they’re not shy about double dipping!

From The Guardian

If you can't watch the video, the trascript is in the article above.

Quote:The duo then carried out 14 trials, each lasting 30 minutes. During each trial, a group of 18 birds was presented with bowls of either pasta and cauliflower or potatoes and carrots alongside three dips: blueberry soy yoghurt, plain soy yoghurt and fresh water.

The birds did not dunk carrots or cauliflower into any of the dips. However, nine of the cockatoos tumbled pasta, potatoes or both into the soy yoghurt, preferring the blueberry flavour over the plain – a finding that suggests the behaviour was not just about texture. The cockatoos also preferred to directly eat the blueberry soy yoghurt rather than the plain option.

Okay, maybe the blueberry dip was just super-tasty. Who would dip carrots or cauliflower in that?

Yeah birds can act super smart. It is strange one would think tiny brain they wouldn't. They can also learn and spread behaviours among themselves in very interesting ways.

There was this alleyway where I grew up that was a common shortcut. One of the houses that backed onto the ally had a cockatoo and over the years us neighbourhood kids would teach the cocky to swore, and it worked.

Those mofos live like 80 years so the bird is likely still alive, but not the owner.

Ravens and crows brains have more neurons for their size than any other bird.

If their are less than 6 ravens at the tower, the monarchy will fall.
