Patches of Classified USAF Squadrons & Programs

Patches are the unofficial language of the black world. Senior Trend at Tonopah, the Special Projects Flight Test Squadron at Groom, detachments at Edwards and Nellis, and the drone squadrons all use embroidery as a way to speak without words. Wizards, scorpions, sigma symbols, and cryptic mottos tell the story better than any press release.

This thread collects emblems tied to Groom, Tonopah, Edwards, Nellis, and the wider reconnaissance and classified community. Some are morale pieces, some are unit issued, and others come from contractors. The goal is to post any patch of this nature you know of or come across and make this the reference point on the internet. Add an explanation or background when available.

Special Projects - Flight Test Squadron 



The Special Projects Flight Test Squadron at Groom Lake uses a wizard emblem filled with stealth symbolism. Stars, sigma, globe, and lightning reference radar testing and electronic warfare, while the sword shape hints at stealth demonstrators like the Bird of Prey.

Bird of Prey



The Bird of Prey was a stealth demonstrator flown out of Groom Lake in the mid-1990s by Boeing’s Phantom Works. Only two Boeing test pilots and one Air Force pilot from the Special Projects Flight Test Squadron ever flew it. When the program was declassified years later, it became clear that the sword symbol in the squadron’s patch echoed the aircraft’s unique shape.

The Ghost Squadron



The Ghost Squadron operates out of Groom Lake, providing helicopter support, security, and search-and-rescue for classified flight test units. Its patch carries a cryptic motto and a star marking the Southwest, pointing to the squadron’s hidden role.

Groom Lake Operations Group



An Operations Group patch from Groom Lake combines multiple base symbols. Stars reference Area 51, tools mark maintenance, and a red star hints at the Red Hats and Red Eagles. Green footprints point to the Ghost Squadron, lightning spells out EW, and streamers reflect the Janet fleet. Its motto in French translates to “Imagination without boundaries.”

Green Door, "A Lifetime of Silence"



The exact project tied to the “Green Door” patch is unknown, but it clearly belongs to the cloak-and-dagger world of black programs. Its symbols point toward the American Southwest, the motto “A Lifetime of Silence” underscores secrecy, and the green door references both secure military vaults and the wider cultural idea of a forbidden or inaccessible place.

Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3




An eagle patch from a late-1990s Groom Lake program shows six stars likely referencing Area 51 and three more for Detachment 3. Its motto is a garbled mix of Latin and Greek, often interpreted as “freedom throughout the cosmos,” though the exact meaning and project remain unknown.

Panther Den




Panther Den is a Special Access Program under Big Safari. It oversees classified information warfare efforts, with related projects known as Pirate Sword, Steel Puma, and Project Deborah.

Minotaur




Minotaur is a still-classified Skunk Works program. Details remain scarce, but it is rumored to resemble the Minion project and may have served as a technology demonstrator for it.

Northrop Stalker II




There is no publicly available information about Northrop’s “Night Stalker II” program. The numeral II suggests a “Night Stalker I,” which remains equally obscure. This had to be a project before 1994, when Northrop and Grumman merged.

Global Engagement Military Spaceplane





The MiST (Military Spaceplane Technology) Program Office at Kirtland AFB produced this patch. The original design featured a Star Wars X-Wing until Lucasfilm lawyers forced a redesign, leaving the altered aircraft shape seen here.

The Cutting Edge




The Space Warfare Center at Schriever AFB oversees evaluation and integration of space and missile systems. Its Special Projects Division is assumed to handle the same functions for “black” space programs, operating on the classified side of military space.

IF I TELL YOU I HAVE TO KILL YOU




IF I TELL YOU I HAVE TO KILL YOU is a generic morale patch for “black” projects, designed by a member of Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Four (VX-4) at Point Mugu. VX-4 later merged with VX-5 to form VX-9, which keeps detachments at NAWC China Lake and Point Mugu.

Lockheed Skunk Works "Vindicator"




"Vindicator" was a Skunk Works project from the 1980s during the era of the F-117. The patch shows the ADP skunk with a helmet, alongside a laser-based air data system that replaced pitot probes on stealth or high-speed aircraft.

"Low Observable" Flight Test




“LO Flight Test” refers to low observables radar trials, likely at Groom Lake. The patch uses the sigma symbol for radar cross section, paired with phrases like “huge deposit” and “no return,” pointing to B-2 stealth bomber testing.

Red Hats




The Red Hats were the 6513th Test Squadron at Groom Lake, tasked with flying and evaluating Soviet aircraft acquired through covert channels. Their hangars on the north end of the base became known as “Red Square.” The squadron began in the late ’60s under HAVE DRILL and HAVE DOUGHNUT, later transitioning in 1992 into the 413th Flight Test Squadron. The six stars on their patch likely reference Area 51.

The 413th Flight Test Squadron, “Bombcats”




The 413th Flight Test Squadron, known as the “Bombcats,” was based at Edwards North Base with detachments at Groom and Tonopah, the squadron tested electronic warfare systems worldwide. Programs under its watch carried names like SUNDOWNER, ZIPPER, and IBIS DAWN. Though deactivated in 2004, its assets rolled into the Electronic Warfare Directorate at Edwards.

Nutcrackers (EW)




The “Nutcrackers” were a detachment of the 413th Flight Test Squadron operating out of Groom Lake and Tonopah. The 4+1+3 stars on the patch denote the 413th, while the crow and lightning bolts highlight its electronic warfare role.

Electronic Warfare Directorate




The Electronic Warfare Directorate at Edwards AFB serves as the Air Force’s main EW test organization. Its mission spans both defensive and offensive avionics, with work often described as part of the broader “Infowar” revolution in military technology.

Electronic Warfare Advanced Headquarters




EWAH traces back to the 413th Flight Test Squadron and now sits under the EW Directorate at Edwards North Base. The unit has its own commander and reports directly to the directorate. Its patch shows 5+1 stars, a nod to Area 51 and the Groom Lake connection.

Very cool, I had not really considered that crews would wear crests like this on their uniforms. I always assumed that they would wear something generic to fit in and not announce their specialty.

Kind of like we do in EMS. Shoulder flash for the service you work for and then your designation, Advanced Care Paramedic, Critical Care, etc.

Scaled Composites Seekers Test Flight




Scaled Composites, best known for SpaceShipOne, also conducts classified test work for the DoD out of Mojave near Edwards AFB. This patch comes from an unidentified flight test, reflecting the company’s role in both experimental aerospace and black-world programs.

Advanced Technology Observation Platform




ATOP stands for Advanced Technology Observation Platform, first flown in 1990. Its motto, Furtim Vigilans (“Vigilance Through Stealth”), points to a classified surveillance role. Little else is known, except that it apparently was on the Tonopah Test Range.

Air Force Special Projects Office




The Air Force Special Projects Office, known as the “A Division” of the NRO, was based at Los Angeles AFB. It managed the Air Force’s portfolio of reconnaissance satellites, from SIGINT to imaging systems, giving the service a global reach from orbit. Unlike Groom or Tonopah units that flew aircraft, AFSPO’s work was space-based, but its patches often carry the same cryptic style and language seen across the black world.

* Within the NRO, each lettered division ties back to a parent agency: A Division was the Air Force Special Projects Office at Los Angeles AFB, running reconnaissance satellites; P Division was the Navy’s arm, focused on ocean surveillance and SIGINT from orbit; and D Division was the CIA’s branch, responsible for the early and most sensitive imaging systems. Together these divisions formed the hidden structure of America’s satellite intelligence programs.

Skunk Works Prowler




Word has it that Prowler was a Skunk Works stealth ISR project tied into the evolution of RQ-170 operations. Some versions of the patch show Roman numerals IX on the left and XI on the right, likely a memorial to 9/11. The implied mission: protect CONUS by pushing reconnaissance forward and hunting terrorists abroad, in places like Afghanistan and beyond.

I remember Minotaur. There was just enough information released to make it interesting. It came about around the time of Minion and Top Cover. Top Cover was seen by a former ATS member flying over a range in Australia. All three were very interesting programs.

I picked up a Janet patch that’s pretty cool, as well as a glow in the dark “Area 51 Defenders” patch with a glow in the dark alien on it. I’ll have to dig them up.

412th Test Wing’s Special Projects Office




SEMPER EN OBSCURUS is the current patch of the 412th Test Wing’s Special Projects Office at Edwards AFB. The phrase translates as “Always in the Dark,” and the mushroom symbolizes the secretive nature of the unit’s work.

Rapid Capabilities Office




The Rapid Capabilities Office at Air Force HQ in Washington integrates and oversees classified programs across the DoD. Its patch shows a black-and-gray earth for the “black world” and carries a Latin motto translating to “Doing God’s work with other people’s money.” Many believe the RCO is the quiet steering hand behind some of the Air Force’s most sensitive aerospace efforts, from stealth prototypes to space-based systems.

Directorate of Special Projects




The Directorate of Special Projects managed billions in Air Force special access programs, overseeing budget and acquisition for the black world. Its patch depicts a classified aircraft flying above a dark globe, symbolizing operations hidden from view.

Don't Ask




The 22nd Military Airlift Squadron at Travis AFB uses C-5s to move classified aircraft from Southern California plants to secret test sites. For these late-night runs, crews swapped their regular heraldry for this patch. The black background and crescent moon mark night ops, the question mark signals classified missions, and “NOYFB” stands for “None of Your Fucking Business.”

B-2 Classified Test Flights




This patch marked a B-2 Spirit flight test series tied to the 509th Bomb Wing. The sigma symbol represents radar cross section trials, while the alien nods to the wing’s Roswell lineage. The motto, in dog-Latin, translates as “Tastes Like Chicken,” with a knife and fork driving home the joke.

Big Safari




Big Safari is the Air Force’s rapid-response special projects shop, focused on ISR and electronic warfare. They take normal airplanes, wire them with secret payloads, and get them into theater before anyone else could move the paperwork.

You Can Run...




This patch represents Division 4 of the NRO, with orbits around Earth symbolizing different reconnaissance missions. The geostationary orbit ties to SIGINT satellites like Rhyolite/Aquacade, the Molniya orbit reflects long-dwell SIGINT coverage, and the polar orbit is linked to imaging and photographic reconnaissance.

AF TENCAP Special Applications




TENCAP, or Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities, takes reconnaissance satellite capabilities normally viewed as strategic and adapts them for battlefield use. The “Special” designation indicates work in the black world. The motto Oderint Dum Metuant, translated as “Let them hate so long as they fear,” reflects the unit’s secretive and uncompromising mission.

NRO Dragon



 This is a program patch from the National Reconnaissance Office, the United States’ “black” space agency whose existence was a secret until the early 1990s (the agency was formed in the early 1960s).
DRAGON is a code name within the BYEMAN information compartment for the infrared imaging capabilities on CRYSTAL (advanced KH-11) reconnaissance satellites.

“I Could Tell You But The You Would Have To Be Destroyed By Me” by Trevor Paglin is a must-have for anyone with even the slightest interest in this topic. The photos and his explanations of what is KNOWN vs what is speculated with each one are all worth the time. 

Now then… Regarding the Northrop Night Stalker II patch you shared above - I have a sneaking suspicion that, like the Bird of Prey patches shown above that what appears to be an Indian in a headdress with a single feather in the middle is the general outline of an airplane. The box containing the word “NIGHT” is the outline of the wings and the nostrils are the exhaust. I’ll go out on a limb and speculate the the “eyes” are the same general shape of the air inlets seen from head-on. That patch has always stood out to me as one enormous wink and a nod to anyone who lives in that world.
