Article:
Quote:Two Chinese scientists have been arrested for smuggling a toxic fungus that can be used as an “agroterrorism weapon” into the United States.
Yunqing Jian, a 33-year-old scientist at the University of Michigan, and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Zunyong Liu are accused of smuggling a fungus called Fusarium graminearum, which can infect food products like wheat, barley and rice with “head blight”, and subsequently cause vomiting, liver damage and reproductive defects in humans and livestock.
The fungus is classified in scientific literature as a “potential agroterrorism weapon”, the FBI said.
“It is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year,” the US attorney’s office statement added. https://www.yahoo.com/news/chinese-scien...46560.html

IMO it really is an act of War but is from an individual(s) or is it actually state sponsored ?

A little more on the warfare aspect; this time A.I.
Quote:And few terms lend themselves to the fear-mongering market quite like AI, both because of its real game-changing potential, but also because of how it’s long been presented in pop culture. When most people hear “artificial intelligence,” they conjure images of the Terminator wiping out humanity, or the machines in the Matrix using human beings as batteries… but as we’ve discussed in past videos, that’s not what current state AI is. And if you ask me... that leaves a much scarier alternative to worry about.

"The fungus labeled a "potential agroterrorism weapon" in a recent arrest touted by the Trump administration likely originated in North America and is already widely prevalent around the country, a researcher who studied the fungus for the federal government says.
University of Michigan researcher Yunqing Jian and her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, were charged with trying to smuggle strains of a fungus called Fusarium graminearum into the United States. Jian worked at the University of Michigan, according to officials, and Liu works at a Chinese university. The two have co-authored research into the fungus."

They should be allowed to study it to hopefully find ways to combat it, considering these new facts.

Curious why this is such a firestorm now. The fungus does exist in the USA and throughout the world already. Not trying to downplay it though. Were they trying to find ways to advance it or destroy it? My hunch is to advance it. But we supply a lot of wheat and other agriculture products to several countries so why so much hate? China has food insecurity issue themselves so it seems a spiteful and potentially self-harming action.
Quote:“It is a globally prevalent pathogen. Arguably, there is nowhere in the world that does not have it,” he said. While the pathogen posed a threat to crops such as wheat, it had been present in fields for a long time and was not highly contagious, he added.
Indeed, the pathogen has been found across the US and has been studied extensively there for decades, with ample literature published.

From what I can tell from my bit of research, the boyfriend , Liu Zunyong, 34, is back in China as of May 2024. The girlfriend, Jian, has now been charged, arrested and is in custody but my bigger question is, this happened in July 2024 - almost one year ago. And NOW it's an issue? It took that long to bring charges?
Quote:After training at the University of Michigan, he returned to China and joined his alma mater in May last year. His profile on Zhejiang University’s website was not accessible on Wednesday. If he returned to China in May, why was he flying back to the USA in July? Why weren't they both added to a no-fly list? He is still in China apparently.
It's clear this wasn't handled properly from the git go.
But here's more from the same site:
Quote:The latest accusations against Chinese scientists in the United States, alongside other measures, could further impact scientific research collaboration between the two countries.
In April, two homes of cybersecurity expert Wang Xiaofeng were raided and he was dismissed from his position as a professor at Indiana University Bloomington.
We are under attack from all sides. Extra alertness and efforts needs to be enforced to keep danger at bay.
