Is it really relevant, or is it just filler?

Very true. The whole book is written around the buried memories. Those I intersperse in the rest of the story, but the real story is the flashbacks.

but I more and more think I need to rewrite the first three chapters and make them one. But as I read and listen to other books the pacing seems similar, so wanted to get outside opinions.

right now it is written with the formwork/mold/outline of 24 chapter hero’s journey. It meets all the field posts along the way. But… I find myself wanting to condense the beginning. But that would break the pattern set.

anyways that is my real question in all this. Condense or just revise what I have.
