Banning Voter ID - California legislature says "Yes."
#1
In an amazing (to my mind) surrender to sober process, the California legislature has submitted a Ban of voter ID requirements to the state's Governor.

A word about the source article... it seems to be politically charged.  However the facts still present themselves within it.

From ZeroHedge: California Bill Banning Voter ID Passes Legislature, Awaits Newsom's Signature

The measure would ban local governments such as Huntington Beach - where the City Council was just given voter approval to impose such a requirement - from requiring voters to prove their identity, and passes jurisdiction for such laws to the state.

From my point of view, a state can, and in many cases should, seek ultimate adjudication power over such things.  The voters of the community seem to have made their wishes known... but presumably the legislative assembly won't have it... demanding that no voter IDs are necessary... I can't imagine why "anyone whatsoever" should be allowed to vote in the electoral process... but I suppose that's just a 'me' thing.

The false premise is that disadvantaged citizens don't have identification. California is overwhelmingly democrat, so voter fraud won't affect the inevitable Harris win in California, but it could tip some state Congressional races.

First off, I’m not a US citizen so my opinion essentially doesn’t matter.

ID is required to vote in both Canada and Mexico elections, so I really don’t understand why some places in the US are dropping the requirement. Don’t they realize that what is implemented for their benefit today will quite possibly work against them tomorrow?

As an outsider I find it very shortsighted and naive.

In Oklahoma they just have a list of names and they check it off when you come in to vote. I haven't voted but I took my father in law. I could have easily just picked a name further down the list and voted. No id was required, no cameras either. So I can understand the need to have ids.

I don't understand how not having a id these days is possible, but if they are concerned maybe other authentication could be required for those that wish to vote but have no id. Like a voter id that you apply for that is free.

Perhaps I'm not thinking clearly, or am so far removed from the lives of other people as to not understand.  I can't envision an adult life without securing identification (just for the purposes of living  a life where I can operate in society.)  Even the homeless have IDs to receive help from the government (such as it is.)

I don't know anyone who doesn't have one.  And the only reason I can think of to say "I don't have ID" is one where I fear being identified for some reason.  And I can't really grasp the notion of not wanting an ID and still expecting to vote, or drink, or get a license for anything, or still be able to deal with a bank or an employer.

If this "not having an ID" is just an excuse to "get away with something," how would I expect that I should still able to vote, or any of the other things where a valid ID could be reasonably expected?

It feels like a theatrically contrived 'problem' where the proposed solution in California is "don't ask."

I just don't "get it."

Can anyone make a case for ID to vote in civic elections being 'wrong' or 'oppressive' to expect?  I missed the justification that is driving this "issue."

Bahahaha!!

Exactly Max! That’s essentially what I was trying to say. If you are a citizen, they already know who you are, where you live,, and what you do.

I say meh. Fuck it. If there is a scenario where you need to defend yourself from the tptb then we are all going to be in the same boat.

I can sharpen sticks and throw rocks with the best of them!
