Astronaut Soldier on the Moon

But honestly, pulling that off without the world noticing would be next to impossible. Between amateur skywatchers, satellite tracking, and the logistics of getting people there and back safely, it’d be a massive operation to keep under wraps. Still, the idea of a hidden lunar outpost run by the military? That’s the kind of thing that keeps people staring at the stars.  :P

Agree.   But what if the "outpost" wasn't new?   What if the stealth launch was performed way back when detection was not so acute as now?   I don't necessarily believe this -- I'm just spitballin' -- but it's an interesting thing to think about.   ISS denizens would HAVE to know about it.  I think. Wow

The Vela satellite program began around 1963, and served to detect atmospheric nuclear weapons tests as part of the non-proliferation Treaty.

This would mean that any "stealth" lunar base established prior to launch detection technology  would have been in operation now, for going on 70 years?

You'd be very hard pressed to find one piece of complex hardware, as would be critical to an manned installation on the Moon, that would not have required repair/replacement in that time.

And, given the fact that we are talking about a level of technology more than half a century old, it is highly unlikely that such repairs,  and or replacements could be sourced in situ:  they'd have to come from Earth.

There goes the idea of an  "undetected launch" .

Moon is pretty well mapped and there are actually live feeds of a lot of things these days.

Bless you for the link!

Been craving that kind of "weather" station for a bit now... couldn't find one I liked.

I like this one... nice aggregation ...

I like your line of thinking.

Now....imagine if the ISS wasn't the only platform up there capable of housing people.   Think of a waystation of sorts being up there, ready to ferry folks to other places

I feel sorry for him.

I hated being stranded on the moon... and there's always that nagging thought, "what if 'something happened' and no-one ever comes back"?

Something did happen... it’s called the government shutdown.
