Answering the calls
#1
The landline connection to the unknown void.
Answering the phone,  another universe resident calls.
Who is on my speakerphone?
The tip of the unknown iceberg is their phone number.

A reckless author is hogging the line.
The character claims to come with five million to one odds.
Opening a letterbox to a flood of letters.
Yet the mail is shallow in answers but deeply steeped in after-hours sales.

Demands they cash in on the betting slip are met with an engaged signal.
Unplugging the phone generates return calls.
Throwing the callers' notions into rush hour traffic silences the line.

A salty-tasting but fascinating menu.
Plates pile up beside a rarely found recipe on an oak table.
Others booked a table, but the remaining seats lay empty.

An answering machine message.
A fellow traveller seeking to fill in the musty blank pages.
Is this poison fruit on the mind's baking tray?
Unwrapping toffee-coated signals.

The grand dining hall doors creak.
Another seat at the table is taken.
On the chair is the bag of enlightenment seeds.
From those seeds, an inkwell is filled.
Yet many pages remain unwritten.

I am so impressed with the way you translate imagery!

Wow, utterly fascinating, xpert11.

I can't explain it any other way than I felt like I was 'reading' a Salvador Dali painting... if that makes sense.

And, just like the Master's paintings, I get lost in it; I keep on reading your poem and keep finding new details... and can't escape the 'canvas'.

Thank you for the feedback. My goal has been to avoid writing my usual fare to prevent going overboard with historical fiction and thinly disguised takes on current events and possible future wars. (Of course, that assumes I can extract decent tales from those matters and not just me boring the reader by making specific points under a fictional guise).

However, I enjoy avoiding logical story outlines with my experimental poetry/writing.

It takes courage to think laterally and go off at a tangent from logic, but it's the only way to truly produce original content. So, I applaud your experimenting with different writing styles.
