I'm not modern enough to be atheist or smug enough to be a Christian (monotheist). I've openly made an allegiance with deism. I concur with the Aristotelian conception of God as the Unmoved Mover but I don't think it has ever revealed itself to humanity, least of all in Semitic language.

"I'm not smug enough to be christian" says the person that just did a thread titled "I'm a deist."
Plus, It's not like Deism is an alternate to christian morality. Deism doesnt mean you have to discount Christianity. There's even Deistic Christianity too! Its more Universalist and even has a reform (Semitic) vibe to it. But even with deism, the teachings of Christ, Buddha, Zoroaster, or Lao Tzu can still be applied. Maybe even a saint born in June can act as a supplimental moral guide for your deism? Like my version of Deism is about chaos. Thermodynamics as a godhead. The laws that structure the appearance or order. But It's really ambivalent to our existence. Luckily we also have thermodynamic law encoded into our very biology. So life mutuates via the entropy of the master coding and increases in complexity too. But with that being so pseudoscientific. Some pseudomorality never hurts. There are ways to have a more fruitful chaotic experience. Not being an iinsufferable happiness drain has its own advantage in your ability to thrive too. And that's all what Christ is about.

In the 18th century deism was seen as a polite alternative to atheism which was radical. All the religions icons you mention never actually wrote any texts themselves. We only have sayings that were attributed to them. I personally suspect the real historical figures were very different to the distorted accounts which have been transmitted to us. So the great world religions are derived from popular opinion. Also I don't really go in for highbrow pseudoscience babble.

So??? What does "who they REALLY were" matter?
Does the warped version of Ariel Disney gave us in the 80s make her any less important to everyone who loved her? Does my version need to throw herself on rocks like the twisted Danish version and be more historically accurate? What does true historicity have to do with the abstract morality models you use as a personal tao? Especially in deism.. I think the interchangeable moral compass is more like a map or navigation chart to give you a rough estimation of the terrain (and experience) you might encounter, and equip you for what to do when the road it says existed doesn't. What is Job but a guide for what one can do when the "This Too Shall Pass" cycle gets sadistic and seemingly wants to rape you to death for no reason? And analogs of that, which happen all the time. And happen naturally with the flow of increasing disorder. Your house gets flooded the month you get diagnosed with cancer. With deism, while it wasnt a direct personal interaction from god, it was still experiencing god's program at its most sigma variant for bad luck. So while it is not a bet between God and Satan, it kinda still adds a nonduality to our most horrid experiences and works as a useful parable for when rain becomes persistent and torrential. Maybe Job's keeping of faith is not really any different then me saying, "Shit happens, this too shall pass." You can use any archetype you want, really. And it will work up until the time it doesnt pass anymore. |
